JioPhone Prima 4G feature phone is available to buy in India ahead of Diwali, Jio said in a statement sent out to the media today. The Prima 4G was announced and previewed at the recently concluded India Mobile Congress 2023 organised in the National Capital between 27-29th October 2023. With it, Jio wants to make India “2G Mukt”, a slogan the company generally uses to reference its hardware and services. As is the norm, the JioPhone Prima 4G is an affordable mobile phone— keypad feature phone— but because it’s based on Kai OS, which is a fork of Firefox OS, it can connect to the internet and supports a bevy of “smart” features including WhatsApp, YouTube, and UPI (short for Unified Payments Interface).

The JioPhone Prima 4G feature phone is priced at Rs 2,599. Jio says, it’s now available to buy from key retail stores and online platforms like Reliancedigital.in, JioMart Electronics and Amazon.

Jio is touting the feature phone’s “space” design that’s seemingly stylish and ergonomic “blending aesthetics with a comfortable grip”. Its key USP though is the smart feature set. Based on Kai OS software, the JioPhone Prima 4G feature phone can run apps like YouTube, Facebook, and WhatsApp. It supports up to 23 languages and even has access to the Google Assistant which is to say it answers to voice commands.
Jio has also put its extensive catalogue of homegrown apps including JioTV, JioCinema and JioSaavn for entertainment, JioNews for news, and JioPay for facilitating UPI payments.
Talking about specs, the JioPhone Prima 4G has a 2.4-inch colour display, 0.51GB of RAM, and an 1800mAh battery. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. The feature phone has cameras on both the front as well as on the rear and there is support for storage expansion, too.
