The next generation iPhone 17 series is going to be more than just subtle colour refreshes and increased price tags. In the months leading to the September Apple launch event, leaks about the iPhone 17 series have left almost nothing to the imagination. We now know that the base iPhone 17 will be the only model in the series to get the least upgrade as far as specifications and features are concerned.
The attention then falls upon the absolutely new iPhone 17 Air – a slim version of the iPhone 17 that aims to bring back the trend of slim smartphones from yesteryears. The iPhone 17 Air will trade its dual camera for a single-lens camera system to keep the thickness in check. However, this model is expected to get the next-gen A19 chipset, a nicer display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a decent battery life and more.
That brings us to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max – the two non-compromise models in two sizes that form the bulk of iPhone sales in most markets like the USA, UK and UAE. iPhone 17 Pro series design
After retaining the same design since the iPhone 12 Pro from 2020, Apple is doing a major design rehash for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. Although the triangular triple lens arrangement remains, a rectangular element will shroud them along with the rest of the top half. The design implementation has been done in many Android phones (something more akin to Poco phones). The edges of the phone could also be softer and more rounded for a more comfortable in-hand feel. There are rumours of Apple going back to steel in favour of Titanium to reduce costs.
Display
The bigger iPhone 17 Pro Max might keep its large 6.9-inch screen along with the 120Hz ProMotion OLED panel. However, the focus is likely to be the arrival of 120Hz refresh rate OLED panels on the non-Pro models. It seems that Apple could differentiate between the Pro and non-Pro models only by retaining features like variable refresh rate and Always On display exclusively for the Pro versions.
Performance
For enhanced speed and power, the Pro models are likely to get Apple’s brand-new A19 Pro chip. This means they will be even faster and handle demanding apps and AAA console-quality games. The A19 Pro is expected to be based on a more refined TSMC 3nm node that should offer better power efficiency while allowing more performance. The iPhone 17 Pro Max might also get more RAM, possibly jumping to 12GB, thus allowing the device to run multiple apps at once for superior multitasking.
Cameras
For the cameras, Apple is expected to go all in this year. Following a trend from its Android rivals, Apple is rumoured to upgrade all three rear cameras on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max to 48MP sensors. This means that, other than the 48MP main and 48MP ultrawide sensors, the telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom could also use a 48MP sensor, thus enhancing the zoom performance. This should enhance the zoom performance of the most expensive iPhone, bringing it on par with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and Xiaomi 15. 8K video recording could also be on the cards this year.
Battery and Charging:
The new Pro iPhones are also expected to see larger capacity battery, enhancing the overall stamina by an hour or two. While more battery life is always welcome, Apple is also reportedly working on improving the charging speeds to 35 watts. Although it won’t be as fast as some Chinese Android flagships, the 35-watt charging could make the wait at charging stations a tad shorter.
iPhone 17 Pro expected India price
With more new features and a faster processor, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are rumoured to see an increment in price. The base prices are expected to be dearer by another Rs 5,000 over its predecessors, thus making them compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 foldable flagship.
