September is here and we all know what that means in tech circles. New iPhone season is here. On September 9, Apple will unveil a fresh batch of iPhones, at its ‘It’s Glowtime’ special event. There is enough evidence that AI—Apple Intelligence—will play a big role in this year’s iPhones as Apple looks to catch up with big tech rivals. The feature drops have already started but the impending iPhone 16 series will be the first to boot—at least some of—these AI conveniences right out of the gate. We’ll know soon enough.

September marks the onset of India’s festive season and so, we can expect a lot of Chinese brands to come up with smartphone launches before flagship sale events from Amazon and Flipkart officially kick off before Dussehra and Diwali in October. Expect even more announcements as we move further along. At least one of these brands has already dropped the ball—Motorola is launching the Moto Razr 50 in India also on September 9. Vivo is prepping the Vivo T3 Ultra though it is yet to reveal the launch date.

Here are the top smartphones to launch in India in September 2024:

  1. iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus: The iPhone 16 series is rumoured to feature some modest updates compared to last year’s models. Speculation is rife that the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus might receive “pro” hardware, making them compatible with generative AI features that are currently exclusive to the Pro models.
  2. iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max: The iPhone 16 Pro models will reportedly sport larger screens, with the Pro version increasing from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches and the Pro Max growing from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches. A new addition to the Pro models is a dedicated camera button, though it’s unclear if it will replace the existing Action Button. More significant hardware changes may not arrive until the potential release of the “iPhone 17 Slim” next year.
  3. Motorola Razr 50: Motorola launched the Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra together, though in India the ultra-version was launched first. The relatively more affordable Moto Razr 50 will arrive on September 9 with a respectable 3.6-inch cover display. The Razr 50 has the same inner folding display with 32-megapixel selfie camera as the Razr 50 Ultra. It has the same primary rear camera but swaps the telephoto for a 13-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide. The Razr 50 is the first phone to come powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300X, which apparently has been created specifically for fonding devices. The battery here is 4,200mAh with 30W wired and 15W wireless charging support.
  4. Vivo T3 Ultra: Hot on the heels of the T3 Pro, Vivo is looking to expand the T3 lineup with an even more powerful phone called the Vivo T3 Ultra. The phone has been spotted on Geekbench website confirming the chipset. This is MediaTek Dimensity 9200 Plus. Buzz has it that the Vivo T3 Ultra will come with a 6.77-inch, 1.5K, 120Hz AMOLED display with up to 4,500 nits of peak brightness. It is said to come with a 5,500mAh battery and 80W fast charging support. The T3 Ultra will reportedly be IP68 certified too. More details are awaited.
