Meta-owned Instagram, one of the most popular media-sharing and social media platforms, will now let users hide read receipts in direct messages. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram boss Adam Mosseri both announced the update on their Instagram broadcast channels.
Mark Zuckerberg announced the new feature writing, “If you’re someone who leaves people on read: your day has come. We’re testing the ability to turn off read receipts on Instagram DMs.” Meanwhile, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri teased along a picture of what the feature will look like in action.

The setting to enable or disable the Read Receipts is hidden in the “Privacy & Safety” settings, as per the screenshot shared.
Notably, the Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp has with a similar feature for a long time, and Instagram will carry forward this feature.
Instagram hasn’t issued an official statement regarding the availability of the feature. However, Mark Zuckerberg hints that the company folks are “testing the ability” therefore it will be available to all users in the coming weeks.

Having an option to enable or disable read receipts gives you a choice: whether you want the sender to let know that you have seen their messages or not. It is a useful feature, in all senses, especially if you have turned off read receipts on WhatsApp, too.
In related news, Instagram recently added the option to add lyrics to the songs in Reels. This ability is similar to how one adds lyrics to Stories.
