Google Maps has rolled out a new feature designed specifically for iPhone users, offering a smarter way to save places of interest. This new tool can analyze your screenshots to identify and store location details directly within the app. It’s especially useful for users who often come across appealing spots—like cafés or landmarks—while browsing social media and want a simple way to keep track of them.
Now, instead of manually saving each location, you just need to take a screenshot, and Google Maps will automatically recognize and pin the place to your map.
To use the Auto-scan feature in Google Maps, you’ll need to grant the app permission to access all of your photos. This doesn’t mean your images are scanned automatically without your control. If you prefer, you can also manually select and upload screenshots for review.
Here’s how Google outlines the process for saving screenshots in Maps:
Open the app and go to the You tab.
At the top, look for a Screenshots section with a “Try it out!” badge. Tap this badge to launch a short tutorial video that demonstrates how the feature works. You’ll even have the chance to test the feature during the video.
When prompted, allow Google Maps access to your photos. You can choose how and when this access is granted. (For those who prefer more control, there’s an option to upload manually — details on that below.)
After capturing a screenshot with location details, return to Google Maps.
If the app detects a place in your screenshot, a notification will appear letting you know that some locations are ready for your review.
Tap Review, and decide whether to save the image to your screenshots collection. You can also move these images to other lists later if you like.
If you’d rather not grant full photo access, you can still upload screenshots manually. Just go to the You tab, find the Screenshots section, and upload your images from there. The rest of the process remains unchanged.
Once saved, these locations will appear on your map and can also be accessed from the You tab whenever you’re on the move.
