Google is working on a new headset for you. As reported by The Verge the tech giant announced a new operating system (OS) meant for ‘extended reality’ devices. Google claimed that this OS will help to enhance the use of VR glasses and headsets.

Android XR: What’s new
On December 12, Google announced Android XR as a new operating system designed for extended reality (XR) devices. It also announced the OS will also come with support for its Gemini AI assistant.
The new device is expected to arrive with upcoming mixed reality headsets as well as smart glasses. Google further claimed that it will also offer support for features that rely on augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI).
The company says that the first developer preview of Android XR was released on Thursday. The preview version already includes support for tools used by developers working on Android applications. This includes Jetpack Compose, Android Studio, ARCore, OpenXR, and Unity.
Furthermore, The new updates aim to develop games and apps for upcoming devices that will arrive with the new operating system.
Other updates
Initially, Apple had released visionOS as its dedicated operating system designed for the Apple Vision Pro in 2023. It also offers support for running apps designed for the headset as well as iPad apps. Now with the new Android XR operating system, users can access Google’s Gemini AI assistant. This means now you will be able to talk to the assistant and ask it questions while wearing any extended reality devices.
In addition to the above mentioned features, Google says that its in-house applications such as Google Photos, YouTube and Google TV will be redesigned to work on a virtual display. This could be similar to how Apple added support for watching content. Apple had added support on a larger, immersive screen visible while wearing the Apple Vision Pro headset.
