A brief but widespread internet outage disrupted major digital platforms, including Google, Spotify, Discord, Twitch, and Snapchat, on Thursday. Several backend services like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Cloudflare, and Firebase were also affected. The interruption was related to a global issue with Google’s cloud infrastructure.

Google confirms the outage is solved
Google has also confirmed the outage and stated that it had affected several of its major services, like Gmail, Google Meet, Google Drive, Voice, and Chat. ‘’The issue with Google Chat, Google Meet, Gmail, Google Cloud Search, Google Calendar, Google Tasks, and Google Voice has been resolved for all affected users,’’ the tech giant stated in an official statement. It further added, ‘’We will publish an analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation.’’
The disturbance, which started around 1:50 pm ET, led to slowdowns in services and access issues were reported across multiple platforms that rely on Google’s cloud systems. Downdetector.com, which keeps a track of service interruptions through users’ reports, recorded around 14,700 outage cases for Google Cloud in the US at the peak of the incident. By 2:32 pm ET, Spotify got around 46,000 outage grievances, whereas Discord received 11,000 complaints.
Services restoration is underway
As per the latest report, most of the services have been restored, Spotify is reported to be showing over 1,000 reports, and Discord was down to 200, signalling a steady return to normal. However, Google’s Cloud dashboard observed that some services were still facing impacts, and engineering teams are continuously monitoring the performance.
While the real technical reason for the disruption continues to be unknown, the outage highlighted the vulnerabilities of platforms that are heavily deepened on centralised cloud infrastructure. Google has given assurance that a detailed review of the incident will be made public once internal security checks are completed.
