Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s co-founder and former chief scientist, is starting a new AI company focused on safety. In a post on Wednesday, Sutskever revealed Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a startup with “one goal and one product:” creating a safe and powerful AI system.

Introducing Safe Superintelligence Inc.

“Superintelligence is within reach. Building safe superintelligence (SSI) is the most important technical problem of our time. We’ve started the world’s first straight-shot SSI lab, with one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence. It’s called Safe Superintelligence Inc,” Sutskever posted in official x post.

Ilya Sutskever explained that SSI is its new organisation’s mission, its name, and its entire product roadmap, because it is his sole focus.

Additionally, Sutskever further explained that his team, investors, and business model are all aligned to achieve SSI.

The future ahead

Sutskever explained that SSI is a startup that “approaches safety and capabilities in tandem,” letting the company quickly advance its AI system while still prioritizing safety. It looks like the new company can reduce the external pressure AI teams at companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft often face. It is believed that the company’s “singular focus” allows it to avoid “distraction by management overhead or product cycles,” Reuters highlighted. Moreover, Sutskever plans to create a safe AI space, in the race of big tech companies trying to dominate the generative AI market.

As explained in the announcement, the new company seems to focus on “Our business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures. This way, we can scale in peace.”

As reported by Reuters, in addition to Sutskever, SSI is co-founded by Daniel Gross, a former AI lead at Apple, and Daniel Levy, who previously worked as a member of technical staff at OpenAI.
