The wait for Starlink’s India entry is over. In a crucial move for the Indian telecom sector, the Indian government has finally granted the operating permission to Elon Musk’s SpaceX-owned Starlink satellite internet service. In an official post from Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, it is confirmed that the operating license has been granted to Starlink, thus enabling SpaceX’s official entry into India.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia shared that he had a “constructive discussion” with Gwynne Shotwell, the President and COO of SpaceX, which owns Starlink. Indian telecom operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have already tied up with the satellite internet service provider for extending coverage beyond the land-based network grid.

Sharing details of his meeting with Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, Scindia posted on X: “Had a productive meeting with Ms Gwynne Shotwell, President & COO of SpaceX, on India’s next frontier in connectivity. We delved into opportunities for collaboration in satellite communications to power Digital India’s soaring ambitions and empower every citizen across the country. With India’s digital revolution under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, satellite technologies are not just relevant, they’re transformative. Ms Shotwell appreciated the license granted to Starlink, calling it a great start to the journey.”

Available in more than 100 nations globally, Starlink provides various internet plans tailored for both home and travel use. In India, the service is anticipated to launch with two main options: a “Residential Lite” plan aimed at smaller families or users with minimal data needs, and a comprehensive “Full Residential” package intended for those requiring greater bandwidth and heavier internet usage.

Starlink price in India:

SpaceX’s Starlink is set to roll out its Standard Kit in India at an estimated price of Rs 33,000. This package will come with everything required to get started with satellite internet, including the Starlink satellite dish, a kickstand, a third-generation router, power adapter, and both Starlink and AC cables. Tailored mainly for home users, the kit is built to handle daily online activities such as video streaming, virtual meetings, and gaming. The monthly cost for unlimited data access is expected to fall between Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,200.

Starlink Internet Speeds:

Starlink delivers fast internet access with speeds typically ranging from 25 Mbps up to 220 Mbps. Many users consistently experience speeds exceeding 100 Mbps. Unlike conventional fiber or mobile services, Starlink functions independently, making it ideal for providing reliable connectivity in remote or underserved locations.

What is Starlink?

Starlink is SpaceX’s cutting-edge satellite internet project aimed at transforming global broadband availability. It utilizes a dense network of satellites orbiting in low Earth orbit (LEO), which are much closer to the planet than traditional satellites. This proximity results in reduced latency and a more dependable, high-speed internet experience.
