A major technical issue at Cloudflare which is the world’s largest internet infrastructure companies had caused widespread disruption across many popular websites and online services. Multiple platforms and websites such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and gaming sites experienced slowdowns and complete outages for several hours.
Several users all over the world reported problems like pages not loading, login failures, and repeated server-error messages. Many also received a confusing alert saying they needed to “unblock” a certain Cloudflare verification domain, even though nothing was blocked on their end.
Cloudflare confirmed the issue in an update on its status page.
“Cloudflare is experiencing an internal service degradation. Some services may be intermittently impacted. We are focused on restoring service. We will update as we are able to remediate. More updates to follow shortly.” the company said on its status page.
In an update on its status page, Cloudflare said it has resolved the issue and is now monitoring for any further errors.. “A fix has been implemented and we believe the incident is now resolved. We are continuing to monitor for errors to ensure all services are back to normal.” the company wrote
Why the Outage Happened?
Cloudflare explained that the incident was caused by a hidden software bug inside a system responsible for managing bot protection.
In technical terms during a routine configuration update, this bug was accidentally triggered, causing the verification system and several internal services to fail.
Although internet traffic began stabilising within a few hours, Cloudflare’s control systems which are the tools used to manage configurations took longer to fully recover. The company admitted it had let users down and promised to prevent similar incidents in the future.
