A major internet outage has hit all services based on Cloudflare, affecting popular online services like OpenAI, ChatGPT, X (formerly Twitter) and every other service dependent on the Cloudflare network. A host of service disruptions rippled across the internet as a significant outage at Cloudflare, the essential web infrastructure and security company, led to widespread failures affecting major platforms. The incident, following the mega AWS outage the previous month, highlighted once again how fragile the modern web services are.

The initial reports of trouble emerged around 5:20 PM IST, with several monitoring services confirming that Cloudflare, which provides content delivery networks (CDN) and DDoS mitigation for millions of websites, was experiencing system-wide issues. Minutes after the outage was spotted, the outage detector platform Downdetector also experienced an outage, signaling a major breakdown.

Cloudflare’s status dashboard acknowledged the outage, assuring developers and customers that the service will be back shortly. “Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue that impacts multiple customers: Widespread 500 errors, Cloudflare Dashboard and API also failing. We are working to understand the full impact and mitigate this problem. More updates to follow shortly,” stated the IT firm.

Update: X (Twitter), along with some other online services, are back online in many regions as Cloudflare confirms fixing the issue. The company is presently monitoring the errors to ensure that all services go back to normal.

“A fix has been implemented and we believe the incident is now resolved. We are continuing to monitor for errors to ensure all services are back to normal,” reads the latest update.
