ChatGPT is bringing something that nobody had asked  – erotica content. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a major shift in the company’s content policy, confirming that ChatGPT will begin allowing erotica for verified adult users by December 2025. This is OpenAI aligning with a new philosophy of ‘treating adults like adults’.

Altman shared his commitment in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.” This means easy availability of adult content on your AI chatbot, eradicating the need to rely on existing websites and portals that servce such content.

The specific definition and limitations for the erotica content remain undefined, but the announcement confirms that OpenAI is preparing to relax strict censorship, especially as more people jump onto the AI bandwagon via ChatGPT.

Erotica coming to ChatGPT

Altman attributed the initial restrictive nature of ChatGPT to necessary safeguards, which are implemented to protect users from potential mental health risks. “We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realise this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right,” wrote Altman.

“Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases,” wrote Altman, referring to the safety features and expanded parental controls rolled out last month.

This policy of opening up the content variety comes in the wake of intense public and regulatory scrutiny over AI safety. OpenAI is part of an inquiry launched by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding potential risks to children and teenagers. Additionally, the company is navigating a lawsuit that alleges its technology contributed to a teenager’s suicide.

ChatGPT to get more personalities

However, Altman is taking a step to make the chatbot more human-like in its behaviour, even if he pointed out the negative aspects of having emotional attachment with an AI chatbot earlier. “In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!),” said Altman.

“If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing),” he added.
