Meta announced that Horizon OS, its VR OS, will work on devices other than the Quest. And partners are already coming: Asus, Lenovo, and Microsoft. Experts believe that a war is expected to rise between Meta, Apple, Sony and eventually Google and Samsung. Amidst this the move by Meta is expected to take them a step ahead of its competitors.
The era of Virtual reality!
With insights from a news article shared in a blog post Monday, the Meta’s OS will be open for third parties. Future headsets will all be able to connect via the same Meta Quest app on iOS and Android that currently exists, but its name will change to Meta Horizon.
Asus is expected to be making a “performance based” VR gaming headset under its Republic of Gamers brand, as per insights from an official post. Experts believe that Lenovo is also planning to make VR devices that will be compatible with Meta Horizon OS. (Lenovo made the Oculus Rift S PC-connected headset with Meta, and it’s made lots of VR and AR products over the years.) According to Meta, Lenovo’s headsets will focus on “productivity, learning and entertainment.”
The road ahead
Furthermore, there will also be an Xbox-branded Meta Quest coming. The limited-edition is expected to be “inspired by Xbox” product with some involvement by Microsoft. However, Meta is yet to share detailed information about the new product, expected to launch in future.
