Apple is reportedly prepping a dedicated “Passwords” app with launch pegged for WWDC 2024 on June 10. The app could be a “home-grown” alternative to popular password managers like LastPass and 1Password helping users manage their login information.
Currently, Apple allows users to save passwords across their iPhone, iPad, Mac and even the Vision Pro headset using iCloud Keychain. The new Passwords app will sync in a similar manner but it will categorise logins into different sections, such as accounts, Wi-Fi networks, and passkeys, according to a Bloomberg report. The app will reportedly support Windows as well. Availability on Android remains unclear at the time of writing.
The Passwords app is expected to debut in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, the report adds. The workings could be similar to LastPass and 1Password and while it’s too early to say if it can replace them, Apple would be hoping it does in the near future. The report suggests Apple’s Passwords app will support autofill for usernames and passwords in addition to generating and storing them. Users will be able to create authentication codes, with it, just like Google Authenticator.
Bloomberg has previously reported that Apple plans to overhaul the “Settings” apps for both iOS and macOS in their upcoming updates. The redesign aims to provide a cleaner user interface, better organisation, and improved search capabilities. The Control Center in iOS will also receive significant updates, including a new music widget and enhanced control over smart home appliances.
iOS 18 will reportedly also allow users to change app icon colours, offering more personalisation options for the Home Screen. Additionally, users will be able to arrange app icons freely, moving beyond the traditional grid layout to better suit their preferences.
