The Apple Pencil Pro isn’t a replacement for the second-generation Apple Pencil. Rather, it’s a slightly more powerful version with a few extra bells and whistles. Broadly, it has four features that set it apart from the Apple Pencil 2. Of these, Find My support is probably the most sought-after, letting you track it from your iPhone or iPad through the Find My app. It’s a feature you’d expect to be normal, but it’s taken a while.
The new pro Apple Pencil also has a haptic engine built inside it giving you subtle feedback when you interact with it, for instance when you double tap on it to switch between tools. The Apple Pencil Pro supports two additional gestures— barrel roll and squeeze. The squeeze gesture opens a new palette allowing you to switch tools, line weights and colours. Apple says “a new sensor” is enabling this feature. Barrel roll meanwhile uses the gyroscope for “precisely” controlling the shaped pen and brush tools by simply rotating the Apple Pencil.
Find My, Haptic feedback, Barrel roll, and Squeeze are unique to the Apple Pencil Pro. This is such a unique product, in fact, that Apple isn’t even allowing backwards compatibility. The Apple Pencil Pro works with only a handful of iPads, all of which were launched on May 7, 2024— iPad Pro 2024 (11- and 13-inch) and iPad Air 2024 (11- and 13-inch). It won’t work with the older iPad Pro 2022 or iPad Air 2022 which is a shame, but again, textbook Apple. This means if you own an older iPad, your choices are still last year’s entry-level Apple Pencil (USB Type-C) or the Apple Pencil 2 from 2018 that continues to flex its muscle even in 2024.
