Apple has scheduled its next hardware event, “Let Loose”, where the iPhone maker will unveil swanky new iPads under the Pro and Air line-ups. While the pro would be its most powerful iPad to date, with the upcoming iPad Air, it is planning to do something different. Or at least that is what rumour mills seem to suggest.
This year, the iPad Air will reportedly have a new 12.9-inch screen option (alongside the more customary 10.9-inch model) and so, it is only fair to let your minds running with some wishful thinking. Speculation was rife that Apple could use a more powerful “mini-LED” panel in this bigger-screen iPad Air. It won’t be completely out of the blue, might we add. The higher-end iPad Pro uses mini-LED XDR while the 11-inch version makes do with an LCD screen.
With the pro iPad switching to an OLED this year (as per reports), it won’t be completely wrong to expect Apple to use any “left-over” mini-LED displays from the current batch to jump start the Air model, while also setting it apart from its relatively lower-end 10.9-inch version. But as we said, it’s wishful thinking, and a new leak now suggests that the upcoming iPad Air will continue to stick with an LCD across both screen size options.

The information comes from Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants who says that the 12.9-inch iPad Air will have a plain old IPS LCD just like the current models. Bummer, right?
If true, chances are that Apple is maybe looking to have the iPad Pro get away with the show stopper crown because all rumours point to it being a “significant” upgrade over the version which was launched back in 2022. The purported OLED panel will be a big draw, but some design tweaks are also reportedly in the works, along with more power under the hood courtesy Apple’s M3 silicon. All this and more will be revealed on May 7. Watch this space for more updates.
