Apple is set to unveil four new iPhone models on September 9, 2024: the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, these next-gen iPhones promise a blend of subtle tweaks and some standout features—especially for the Pro models.

Apple iPhone 16 launch event on September 9, 2024: How to watch it live

Apple’s iPhone 16 launch event—which is titled It’s Glowtime—will be streamed from Apple Park and available to watch at 10:30 PM in India. It will be available to watch online at apple.com and YouTube or on the Apple TV app.

What’s new for iPhone 16 and 16 Plus?

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus won’t see massive overhauls. Both models will reportedly feature the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screen sizes (as the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus), housed in familiar aluminium frames. The upgrades are more about under-the-hood improvements, with both models getting faster—A18—processors and an increase in memory from 6GB to 8GB. This bump in memory is designed to support enhanced features like Apple Intelligence, which is expected to bring more AI-driven functionalities—a first for Apple’s “non-Pro” iPhones.

In terms of design, the non-Pro models will introduce the Action button, previously exclusive to Pro models. This button will offer a customisable way to access various features, adding a touch of Pro-level functionality to the lower-end phones. Another exciting upgrade? Vertically stacked rear cameras, designed to capture spatial video. These 3D clips will be compatible with Apple’s Vision Pro headset, offering an immersive way to relive your favourite moments.

iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max: Bigger screens and smarter cameras

Now, let’s talk about the real stars of the show: the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. While the overall design will largely mirror the iPhone 15 Pro line, Apple is making one big change—the display sizes. The iPhone 16 Pro will reportedly feature a 6.3-inch screen (up from 6.1 inches), while the 16 Pro Max will expand to 6.9 inches from 6.7 inches. The sleeker look will come from significantly slimmer bezels, giving the phone a more refined aesthetic without drastically altering the size.

Like their non-Pro siblings, the Pro models will feature 8GB of memory and the newest Apple—A18 Pro—chips, optimised for artificial intelligence tasks. The real magic, though, lies in the cameras. Both Pro models will boast a 48-megapixel ultrawide-angle camera, up from 12 megapixels. The iPhone 16 Pro will also match the Max’s 5x optical zoom, offering more versatility for zoom photography.

The most buzzworthy addition? A dedicated, touch-sensitive button for taking photos and videos. This DSLR-style shutter button will let users lightly press to focus and apply more pressure to snap a shot, mimicking the tactile experience of professional cameras. You’ll also be able to swipe across it to switch between photo and video (and even to zoom in and out).

Colour shake-up

While the design language remains mostly the same, Apple is refreshing its colour options. The Pro models will introduce a new gold titanium finish, replacing the blue titanium. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will replace last year’s yellow for white and offer fresh shades of green, pink, and blue.

iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max: Expected prices

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus each will start at 128GB of base storage (like the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus with a purported price of USD 799 (roughly Rs 67,100) and USD 899 (roughly Rs 75,500) respectively according to a report from TrendForce.

128GB256GB512GB1TB
iPhone 16$799$899$1,099
iPhone 16 Plus$899$999$1,199
iPhone 16 Pro$1,099$1,299$1,499
iPhone 16 Pro Max$1,199$1,399$1,599

The firm says that the iPhone 16 Pro will likely start at 256GB storage (no more 128GB) like the iPhone 16 Pro Max to “help mitigate the perception of a price increase by offering more storage.” That’ll be USD 1,099 (roughly Rs 92,300) for the iPhone 16 Pro and USD 1,199 (roughly Rs 1,00,700) for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

That said, Apple might still hike all iPhone 16 series device prices slightly (over what’s being quoted here) to balance higher costs in wake of rise in memory prices and use of more advanced technology such as the new tetraprism telephoto lens in the Pro models.

Excitement is building as Apple fans eagerly await the September 9 event! Watch this space for all the updates.
