New rumours are circulating about Apple’s upcoming display technology, with claims that the company is developing a 90Hz refresh rate LCD panel that could make its way into future iterations of the Studio Display, iPad Air, and the 24-inch iMac. These models, which currently feature a 60Hz refresh rate, may soon benefit from a smoother visual experience.
Rumours suggest Apple is working on a “new liquid motion panel” set at 90Hz, which will be featured in several upcoming products. If true, this would mark a notable change for the Studio Display, which has not seen a hardware refresh since its debut in March 2022. The 27-inch monitor, priced from $1,599, offers a 5K resolution with P3 wide color support and 600 nits of brightness but sticks with the 60Hz refresh rate.
Apple fans have been eagerly awaiting a refreshed version of the Studio Display, with rumours suggesting that it could include mini-LED technology and ProMotion (120Hz refresh rate support). However, these hopes were dashed earlier this year when display analyst Ross Young reported that Apple had scrapped plans for a new 27-inch mini-LED display. This unfulfilled project was believed to be a potential successor to the Studio Display, possibly featuring ProMotion support, but it never materialised.
The 90Hz display technology is said to first appear in the next-generation M3-powered iPad Air, which is expected to launch in early 2025. Following this, Apple may integrate the new display into other products, including the 24-inch iMac, which just received an M4 update. However, iMac users may need to wait until late 2025 or even later before experiencing the 90Hz upgrade.
