After creating an empire in the e-commerce sector, the tech giant Amazon is planning to make a mark in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. According to a Reuters report, Amazon will develop a new generative AI model designed to process videos and images, in addition to text. The new AI model, named Olympus, aims to reduce dependency on Anthropic’s Claude chatbot. Here’s a detailed look at the upcoming AI model.
Amazon introduces ‘Olympus’
Olympus will be capable of understanding scenes in both images and videos, enabling users to search for specific scenes, such as “how to cook a dish.” Additionally, users will be able to use simple text prompts to search for anything. The AI can decode text, images, and videos seamlessly.
Last week, Amazon made an additional $4 billion investment into Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI. This follows a similar $4 billion investment in September 2023 to capitalize on generative AI technology. Amazon could officially announce Olympus at the annual AWS re:Invent customer conference as soon as next week.
While Amazon already has the Claude AI chatbot, the launch of Olympus will help ease the workload of Claude. Notably, Claude AI is a popular chatbot on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Other Amazon initiatives
Amazon is also expanding into the space and internet sectors. Recently, the company shared details about its upcoming Project Kuiper, an ambitious satellite internet initiative set to launch in 2025. Although the project was first conceived in 2018, Amazon secured a license from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2020 to deploy and operate its satellite network.
Project Kuiper aims to provide cost-effective, high-speed internet to rural and remote areas, where traditional broadband infrastructure is difficult to establish. The initiative could also play a key role in boosting India’s space sector, with potential collaborations between Amazon, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and Indian space startups.
