Amazon Prime Video is rolling out a new AI-powered feature called X-Ray Recaps, designed to give viewers an efficient way to catch up on the content they’ve missed without interrupting their streaming experience. This generative AI tool allows users to quickly access personalised summaries of episodes, entire seasons, or even specific scenes, all without the risk of spoilers or wasting time rewinding.
The X-Ray Recaps feature is an extension of Prime Video’s existing X-Ray functionality, which already provides viewers with behind-the-scenes information. The new feature delivers bite-sized, relevant summaries of key plot points, cliffhangers, and character developments, tailored to where viewers are in the episode or season.
X-Ray Recaps uses Amazon’s cloud-based generative AI tools, powered by Amazon Bedrock and custom models built with Amazon SageMaker. These technologies analyse video segments along with subtitles and dialogue to generate accurate and spoiler-free summaries. The system ensures that viewers are provided with concise descriptions that are relevant to their current position in the show.
Adam Gray, Vice President of Product at Prime Video, explained the motivation behind the feature, stating, “With X-Ray Recaps, we’re directly solving a common issue for streamers—losing track of where they left off. By providing contextual summaries of key moments, we help our customers dive back into their favorite shows without missing a beat.”
The feature is now in beta and available for Prime Video customers using Fire TV in the U.S., with plans for broader device support by the end of the year. At launch, X-Ray Recaps will be available for Prime Video’s Amazon MGM Studios Originals, including Daisy Jones & the Six, The Boys, The Wheel of Time, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
