Over 70% of smartphones sold on Amazon are being shipped to smaller towns, according to a senior official from the e-commerce giant. “If I take some of our key categories like smartphones, over 70% of the units that we are selling in the country are going to tier 2, 3 towns and the demand is growing in these markets,” Ranjit Babu, Director of Consumer Electronics at Amazon.in, told press persons on Wednesday.
Babu added that this trend is fueled by the access to credit options on the platform, including easy EMIs and Amazon’s Pay Later service. He also attributed the sales growth in smaller towns to the quick availability of consumer electronics such as smartphones and laptops, as well as large appliances like televisions, washing machines, and refrigerators through e-commerce.
“Over 60% of the demand, we are able to deliver within 2 days in these categories,” Babu noted. He further said that Amazon is experiencing double-digit growth in electronics and appliance categories, outpacing the overall industry growth rate. He highlighted that Tamil Nadu has seen a 35% increase in sales, driven by huge demand for premium products across categories.
More customers from Tamil Nadu are opting for premium products across categories, including smartphones priced above Rs 30,000 or Rs 1 lakh, double-door refrigerators, and front-load washing machines.
Babu was in Chennai to announce the 30-day sale season of “The Great Indian Festival,” which is set to begin on Amazon’s platform on September 27.
