Carl Pei has started teasing a new Nothing phone launch. The London-based tech start-up has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons what with its big Robin Hood plans to take on mighty Apple and bring iMessage to Android users going kaput following a barrage of privacy concerns and so, a new phone might just be what the doctor ordered for it to turn the tide in the new year. We’ll see.
Rumour mill has it that Nothing is secretly working on a Phone 2a, which going by its purported naming scheme suggests, it could be an affordable model somewhat on the lines of the Phone 1. A Phone 3 seems a bit of a stretch at this point though, one would hope and expect that’s also in the pipeline and on schedule to launch sometime later this year.
Renders doing the rounds of the Internet hint toward a redesigned chassis while other set of leaks tip an under Euros 400 price tag for a Nothing Phone 2a version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage which falls right under Rs 40,000 when converted to INR. The Phone 1 was Euros 469 at launch while the Phone 2 was launched at Euros 679 and so, it goes without saying that the Phone 2a could stand as the new entry-point for customers wanting to get onboard the Nothing brandwagon in which case, a 120Hz AMOLED display, MediaTek Dimensity 7200 chip, and 50-megapixel main camera —which have all been reported for it— paired with Nothing’s “think different” approach to design seem like an interesting proposition.
Carl Pei took last year’s Mobile World Congress to share some juicy details about the Phone 2 and so, all eyes would be on MWC 2024 in February for the big Phone 2a reveal unless the former OnePlus executive plans to surprise us with an early announcement. Watch this space for more updates.
