Airtel gains momentum in subscriber addition: Trai data

Airtel gains momentum in subscriber additions in June 2025, while Jio leads with 1.9 million new users, according to TRAI. Vodafone Idea and BSNL continue to lose subscribers. FWA and broadband bases grow, as total mobile users in India hit 1.17 billion, led by urban markets.

Reliance Jio added 1.9 million new users in the month of June according to telecom subscriber data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

The country’s second largest telco Bharti Airtel picked up pace in net additions at 763,482 in the month, as compared to sluggish net additions for the past couple of months.

Vodafone Idea’s net customer churn slowed marginally month-on-month (m-o-m) to 217,816 in June, as compared to 274,103 users in May this year.

At the end of June 2025, Jio’s total subscriber base stood at 477.02 million as compared to 475.11 million at end of May. Airtel’s subscriber base at end of June was 391.01million as against May’s 390.25 million while, Vodafone Idea’s subscriber base at the end of the month was 204.22 million (May: 204.44 million) and BSNL’s was 90.47 million (May: 90.77 million).

FWA growth accelerates

Airtel added 201,781 fixed wireless access (FWA) customers in June indicating a ramp up in pace of subscriber addition. Jio reported and increase decrease of 253,201 FWA customers in the month and continues to be the only telco to have a rural presence in the FWA market.

In the month, state-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 305,766 users as compared to 135,654 users the month prior.

As a result, Jio’s FWA base now stands at 6.11 million (May: 5.85 million) and Airtel’s at 1.74 million (May: 1.54 million). The total FWA base in the country in June was 7.85 million.

Urban markets drive overall telecom growth

Overall, the mobile subscribers base rose by 2.45 million to 1.17 billion in June, according to data released by Trai. Growth was led the urban markets which saw 2.97 million subscriber addition while rural subscriber base declined by 0.51 million.

Jio’s market share rose marginally to 41.02% from 40.92 % in May. Airtel’s subscriber market share rose marginally at 33.62% in June after two consecutive months of decline (May: 33.61%). Despite slowdown in monthly customer churn, Vodafone Idea continued to cede market share at 17.56% (May 17.61%). BSNL’s share of user base also shrunk marginally to 7.78% (May: 7.82%).

According to regulator data, active subscribers base, accounted for 93.09% of the total wireless subscribers (May: 93.03%). The total active subscriber base rose to 1.163 billion as compared to 1.08 billion in May.

Among the operators, Airtel’s active subscribers base increased by 1.2 million to 388.04 million, whereas Jio’s active base was grew by 2.42 million at 464.46 million as of June end.

Vodafone Idea‘s active user base was 172.65 million, down by 0.22 million during the month.

Fixed broadband subscribers grew 1.35% month on month at 44.99 million in June (May: 44.09 million).

During the month, 13.58 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP) taking the cumulative MNP requests to 1,160.03 million as compared to 1,146.45 million at the end of May.
