Ahead of iPhone 17, Apple plans to launch cheaper MacBook Air with iPhone 16 Pro processor

The new budget-friendly MacBook Air would incorporate the A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro.

The cheapest MacBook model could borrow the A18 Pro chip from iPhone 16 Pro.

The MacBook Air is currently the most affordable way of experiencing the macOS computing. However, what if you sought an even more affordable MacBook with lesser yet core performance capabilities? Something as affordable as midrange Windows laptops yet offering the familiar iPhone performance? It seems that Apple had the same thoughts in the months leading to the iPhone 17 launch.

Apple is rumoured to be developing a more affordable MacBook Air that would be powered by an iPhone processor, according to a recent report from respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, TF International Securities. This decision marks a significant departure from the current M-series chips that are reserved for MacBooks – an idea more akin to the iPad range.

In a post on X, Kuo indicated that the new budget-friendly MacBook Air would incorporate the A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro. While this would represent a downgrade from Apple’s powerful M-series silicon, the A18 Pro is still considered to be comparable to the performance of the 2020 M1 chip. This should ensure more than enough performance for generic everyday computing tasks like word processing, web browsing, accessing AI tools, watching videos and more.

Production for this rumoured 13-inch laptop is anticipated to commence in late 2025 or early 2026. Apple is reportedly targeting a substantial production volume of 5 to 7 million units for 2026, signaling a strong intent to expand its market reach.

In a bid to attract young computer users, Kuo says that the new model might also introduce a wider array of colour options, including pink and yellow, alongside the traditional silver.

Will cheapest MacBook will be a refreshed M1 MacBook Air from 2020?

Given Apple’s history with repurposing devices to suit market needs, there is a high possibility for Apple to repurpose the chassis and body of the M1 MacBook Air from 2020 and embed the A18 Pro chip instead of the dated M1. The display with thicker bezels may not seem cutting edge but could fare better than most modern Windows laptop displays.

Analysts suggest that this cheaper, A18 Pro-powered MacBook Air could significantly boost Apple’s share in the global computer market. By offering a more accessible price point, the laptop could appeal to cost-conscious consumers and capture a segment of lower-end computer sales currently dominated by Dell, HP, and Lenovo.
