Indian IT firms are facing turbulent times and unprecedented challenges. Big IT companies like TCS and Infosys are laying off employees to weather the AI storm which has automated several jobs. A techie working at TCS who was asked to step-down from the position, recently shared his ordeal on Reddit. The employee in a post has briefly explained what pressure he was subjected by the Human Resource department.
The employee working at Tata Consultancy Services shared his ordeal through a post on Reddit. He shared it under the title “I Denied my resignation in TCS” on Reddit’s ‘r/DevelopersIndia’ forum before sharing it again on ‘r/IndianWorkplace’. Within minutes of posting, he received several comments and likes. Many people encouraged him for his show of strength even in situation like this.
“It has been three days since I was asked to resign in a meeting room. I refused. I was crying and afraid, but TCS is my first company I have nothing to lose. They threatened to give me a bad review after termination, so I said, ‘Do as you like, but I’m not going to resign,’ and I walked out of that room. I was scared, but I tried to be strong,” he wrote.
Benched staff were being targeted first:
The employee explained that the benched staff were being targeted first. “By the way, I’m not a senior employee and my name was not on that list. These people are targeting benched employees because they are easy targets. They are freezing our profiles so that no project can see us or call us for allocation. Even if we manage to find projects through our contacts, RMG calls those projects and cancels our allocation,” he alleged.
This shows how harassing it can be for people or employees who are laid from the Tech and IT firms. Employees receive almost no compensation or support, let alone help in finding other work opportunities.
Sharing his uncertainty, he added, “I don’t know what to do next. I’m just going with the flow. In my branch, several people have refused to resign. HR calls them daily for meetings, asks them to resign, and threatens them with things like freezing salaries, blacklisting them, giving bad reviews, and saying nobody will hire them. But those employees continue to resist. It has been more than 10 days, and they are still at TCS, though struggling.”
He also slammed the company’s work environment:
He also slammed the company’s work environment. “This is mental harassment and torture. It is toxic. I joined TCS for its work culture and job security, even at a very low salary. Now I regret it, I should have chosen another company. After Ratan Tata, this company has changed completely,” he wrote.
The level of harassment and psychological stress that HR departments put on employees to get them to step down is concerning. Moreover, since there is no government code of conduct for the employees being laid off it becomes a harrowing experience. This is not the first time such stories have surfaced online. Earlier, a Pune-based tech professional shared how he resigned from Infosys without another offer in hand, citing similar frustrations.
