NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), extended her heartfelt Diwali wishes to celebrations in the United States and across the globe. In a touching video message shared from her vantage point 260 miles above Earth, Williams reflected on her father’s efforts to preserve their cultural heritage, teaching her and her family about Diwali and other Indian festivals.
“Greetings from the ISS,” she began. “I want to extend my warmest wishes for a Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating today at the White House and around the world.” Williams emphasized the significance of Diwali as a festival of hope and renewal, noting that it is a time when goodness prevails.
During her message, she expressed gratitude to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their participation in the White House Diwali celebrations, acknowledging their recognition of the contributions of the Indian community. “Diwali is a time of joy as goodness in the world prevails… Thank you to the President and the Vice President for celebrating Diwali with our community today,” she said.
This year’s Diwali celebration holds special meaning for Williams, who has been on the ISS since June 5, 2024, as part of a mission that initially planned a week-long test flight. The mission was extended due to safety concerns, and Williams, along with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, is expected to return to Earth in February 2025.
As the world marks this festive occasion, Williams’ message serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural traditions and community spirit, transcending the boundaries of space and time.
