The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has issued a warning to the public that an Asteroid that measures up to the size of an 88-ft airplane is gushing towards planet Earth. According to the information provided by NASA, asteroid 2024 KN1 is scheduled for a close approach to Earth on June 23, 2024, at 11:39 PM IST

This asteroid, part of the Amor group, measures approximately 88 feet in diameter and travels at a speed of about 16,500 kilometers per hour. Despite its close approach, asteroid 2024 KN1 will safely pass by Earth at a distance of 5.6 million kilometers, roughly 14 times farther than the Moon’s distance.

No risk of impact

NASA has categorised this asteroid as non-threatening, assuring the public that it poses no risk of impact. Most near-Earth objects, including 2024 KN1, follow orbits that keep them safely away from our planet. The majority of near-Earth objects, such as asteroid 2024 KN1, travel in orbits that keep them at a safe distance from our planet, posing no threat.

Nonetheless, NASA focuses its monitoring efforts on a minority of asteroids categorized as potentially hazardous. These asteroids have orbits that bring them closer to Earth, potentially posing a risk of impact.

The Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) utilises data from observatories worldwide, including contributions from projects like Pan-STARRS, the Catalina Sky Survey, and NASA’s NEOWISE mission. Radar systems such as JPL’s Goldstone Solar System Radar Group also play a critical role in tracking these celestial objects.

The upcoming close approach of asteroid 2024 KN1 presents scientists with another opportunity to study these intriguing objects within our solar system. Advancements in technology and observational capabilities continually enhance our understanding of near-Earth objects and improve our ability to predict and mitigate any potential future risks.
