We all know guava is one of the most nutritious fruits around. From boosting immunity to supporting gut health, it has long been a go‑to fruit for many of us. But its leaves, which are often ignored or thrown away, are packed with nutrients that can benefit your health in more ways than you can imagine.

“Most people enjoy guavas but end up throwing away the leaves, not knowing how nutritious they really are,” says Nidhi Nahata, Founder of Justbe by Nidhi Nahata, Nutritionist and Lifestyle Coach. “Even adding a few tender guava leaves to your smoothies or teas can support digestion, regulate blood sugar, and help keep the skin clear,” she further added.

Powerhouse of antioxidants

Guava leaves are rich in flavonoids, tannins, and quercetin, plant nutrients known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These protect the body against cell damage that can lead to chronic diseases.

“As a nutritionist, I often remind people that antioxidants are the body’s defence soldiers,” says Nahata. “Guava leaves, in particular, help fight oxidative stress, which is a major factor behind heart disease, diabetes, and even premature ageing.”

A 2017 study in Pharmacognosy Review confirmed that guava leaves significantly reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.

Helps control blood sugar levels

Guava leaves can help regulate blood sugar levels. A 2024 study in Food Science and Nutrition found that guava leaf extract reduced blood sugar spikes after meals. Another October 2024 human trial in Frontiers in Pharmacology showed that drinking guava leaf tea daily for two weeks lowered blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

“This is especially promising for Indians, where diabetes rates are skyrocketing, including guava leaf tea in your daily routine can be a simple, natural step toward stabilising blood sugar,” Nahata explains.

Supports digestion and gut health

If you often feel bloated or deal with indigestion, guava leaves may help soothe it. A 2024 clinical trial in Frontiers in Pharmacology found that drinking guava leaf tea three times a day reduced symptoms of acute diarrhoea in adults.

“Guava leaves have antibacterial properties that fight harmful gut bacteria,” says Nahata. “I’ve seen clients use guava leaf tea regularly and notice less bloating, smoother digestion, and even reduced acidity.”

Good for your heart

A 2017 study in the Journal of Human Hypertension reported that guava leaf extract lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides while raising HDL (“good”) cholesterol.

“Heart health isn’t only about avoiding fried food, it’s also about adding protective foods to your diet,” says Nahata. “Guava leaf tea is a great, natural way to support a healthy heart.”

Acne‑free skin

Beyond internal health, guava leaves may also help your skin glow. A 2017 study in the International Journal of PharmTech Research found guava leaf extract effective against acne‑causing bacteria.

“Many people are surprised when I tell them guava leaves can help with acne,” Nahata adds. “Just boil the leaves, let the water cool, and use it as a gentle face rinse; it can calm redness and fight bacteria naturally.”

May aid weight loss

Guava leaves may also help you achieve your weight loss goals. “Guava leaves can slow down the conversion of complex carbs into sugar,” Nahata explains. “So for anyone watching their weight, a daily cup of guava leaf tea is worth trying,” she further added.

Are there any side effects of having guava leaves?

Guava leaves are generally safe, but as per Nahata, having too much may cause mild nausea or constipation. “If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, always check with your doctor before starting guava leaf tea,” she said.
