From bold eyeliner to glittery eyeshadow, eye makeup can completely change your look. But while makeup is fun to play with, it can also cause serious problems for your eyes if not used carefully.

Dr Shruti Lanjewar Wasnik, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai, says many people don’t realise that the eyes are very sensitive and makeup can sometimes do more harm than good.

“Eye makeup can lead to infections, allergies, dryness, or even damage to the cornea if it’s not used or removed properly,” she warns.

Hence she warns of symptoms to watch out for and simple tips to keep your eyes healthy and safe.

Common eye problems caused due to makeup

1. Eye Infections

Old or shared makeup products can carry bacteria, which may lead to infections like conjunctivitis (pink eye) or blepharitis (eyelid inflammation).

“Never share your eye makeup or use products past their expiry date,” says Dr Wasnik. “Bacteria can grow easily inside mascara or kajal tubes.”

Not removing your makeup properly can also trap dirt and germs near your eyes.

2. Irritation and Allergies

Some people may be sensitive to certain ingredients in makeup, such as fragrances, dyes, or preservatives.

“These can cause red, itchy, or watery eyes,” says Dr Wasnik. “People with sensitive eyes should always use hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products.”

3. Corneal Damage

Applying makeup too close to your eyes or using sharp applicators can scratch the surface of the eye, called the cornea. In severe cases, this can even affect your vision.

“Avoid applying eyeliner on the inner rim of your eye unless the product is specially made for it,” she advises.

4. Dry Eyes

Makeup can sometimes block the tear ducts or disturb the natural tear film, especially if it’s not removed properly.

“This can worsen dry eye symptoms and make your eyes feel irritated or gritty,” Dr Wasnik adds.

Harmful ingredients to watch out for in makeup products

Some eye makeup products contain ingredients that may be harmful over time:

  • Parabens – Used to preserve products, but linked to hormone imbalance.
  • Phthalates – Found in some fragrances and linked to reproductive problems.
  • Lead – A toxic metal that can damage the nervous system. Though banned in many countries, it can still be found in low-quality or unregulated cosmetics.

“Always choose products from trusted brands and check the ingredient list,” says Dr Wasnik.

Tips for safe eye makeup

Dr Wasnik shares simple ways to enjoy makeup without risking your eye health:

  • Use Hypoallergenic products: Choose makeup labelled as hypoallergenic or made for sensitive eyes.
  • Don’t share makeup: Sharing increases the risk of spreading bacteria.
  • Check expiry dates: Replace mascara and liquid liners every 3–6 months.
  • Remove makeup gently: Use a soft cotton pad and gentle remover. Don’t rub your eyes.
  • Apply carefully: Avoid touching the applicator to your eyeball or lash roots. Be gentle.

“Even small mistakes in makeup habits can lead to bigger problems. Prevention is always better,” she says.

Makeup can help you look and feel good, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of your eye health. Many people unknowingly harm their eyes by using expired products, sharing makeup, or not cleaning it off properly.

“Our eyes are delicate. A little extra care while using eye makeup can protect them from serious issues,” says Dr Wasnik.

So next time you reach for that eyeliner or mascara, take a moment to be mindful. With the right habits, you can get your favourite insta-worthy looks and keep your eyes healthy and beautiful.
