Prime Minister Narendra Modi has surpassed American pop stars Rihanna and Justin Bieber to become the fifth most-followed account on X (formerly known as Twitter) according to data gathered by Statista.

As of October 2025, this puts him right behind US President Donald Trump who is at #4 with a 110 million followers and just three ranks away from Elon Musk, owner of and also the most followed account on X with 228.5 followers. Narendra Modi himself has a 108.6 million followers, so he needs a mere 2 million more to over take the US President.

The top 10 most followed accounts on X are:

  1. Elon Musk – 228.5 million
  2. Barack Obama – 129 million
  3. Cristiano Ronaldo – 114.2 million
  4. Donald Trump – 110 million
  5. Narendra Modi – 108.6 million
  6. Rihanna- 105.8 million
  7. Justin Bieber – 105.7 million
  8. Katy Perry – 101.3 million
  9. Taylor Swift – 92.1 million
  10. NASA – 88.1 million

Changing trends in social media

The Prime Minister has seen a monumental rise in his social media statistics. In 2024 he crossed a major X milestone when he attained a following of a 100 million which was a 30 million increase since 2021. This rise continued in 2025 as he went on to gain millions of followers and managed to beat both Justin Bieber and Rihanna who have roughly the same number of followers give or take a few hundred thousand. Upon crossing the 100 million follower milestone he tweeted:

“A hundred million on X! Happy to be on this vibrant medium and cherish the discussion, debate, insights, people’s blessings, constructive criticism and more. Looking forward to an equally engaging time in the future as well.”

Now, Narendra Modi holds the distinction of being the most followed Indian politician on X and the second most followed world leader in office after US President Donald Trump. The list of most followed accounts shows a changing trend in popularity. Gone are the days when celebrities would top these lists, instead they continue to lose followers while accounts like those of Musk’s or Obama’s or Modi’s gain with a startling speed.

The Prime Minister uses X to relay important political decisions and participate in the global sphere; managing to connect with not only other world leaders but also with the general public. It allows him to connect with audiences beyond press releases and election campaigns and his followers are made privy to a more casual side of him.
