Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making history with his two-day visit to Brunei, marking the first official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to this Southeast Asian nation. During his trip, PM Modi will meet Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah at his official residence, the Istana Nurul Iman Palace. This opulent palace is not just a symbol of Brunei’s grandeur but also holds the title of the world’s largest residential palace, according to Guinness World Records.
A Glimpse into History
Istana Nurul Iman, which translates to “Palace of the Light of Faith,” was commissioned by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in 1981. The ambitious project, which cost approximately $1.4 billion, was completed in 1984, just prior to Brunei’s independence from British colonial rule. Designed by the Filipino architect Leonardo Locsin, the palace was envisioned to signify a new era for the country, combining traditional elements with modern luxury.
Magnificent Features
Spanning an astonishing 200,000 square meters, Istana Nurul Iman is unrivaled in its scale and luxury. The palace boasts:
- 1,788 Rooms: Including 257 bathrooms, ensuring ample space and privacy.
- 44 Staircases: Constructed from 38 different types of marble, each staircase contributes to the palace’s opulent aesthetic.
- Banquet Hall: A grand hall capable of accommodating up to 5,000 guests, often used for state functions and large gatherings.
- Parking and Stable: It includes parking space for 110 cars and an air-conditioned stable for 200 polo ponies, reflecting the Sultan’s affinity for equestrian sports.
- Swimming Pools: Five luxurious swimming pools offer leisure and relaxation.
- Mosque: A significant religious structure within the palace grounds, the mosque can accommodate 1,500 worshippers, emphasizing the palace’s role as a center of both governance and spirituality.

Architectural Splendour
The architectural style of Istana Nurul Iman is a masterful blend of Brunei’s Islamic heritage and Malay traditions. The palace’s striking white exterior is highlighted by golden domes, including a central dome adorned with 22-carat gold. The interior, designed by Khuan Chew—who also worked on the iconic Burj Al Arab in Dubai—is equally magnificent, featuring opulent gold and marble décor that enhances the palace’s grandeur.

Prestigious Events
Beyond its role as the Sultan’s residence, Istana Nurul Iman has been a venue for significant events. It hosted the 28th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which was conducted virtually from this illustrious setting. This underscores the palace’s importance not just as a residence, but also as a site for high-profile international gatherings.
Comparison with Other Palaces
While Istana Nurul Iman holds the title for being the largest residential palace, it is not the most expensive. Buckingham Palace in London, valued at approximately $2.9 billion, holds that distinction. Nonetheless, the sheer scale and opulence of Istana Nurul Iman make it a unique and extraordinary symbol of Brunei’s royal heritage.
