Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his social media platforms to applaud his son, Nandil’s recent triathlon achievement in Bahrain. The proud father posted about the accomplishment on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote that his son had completed the famous Ironman 70.3 triathlon, widely regarded as one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world.
Nandil Sarma completed the Ironman 70.3 in 6 hours 48 minutes and has already set his sights on the full Ironman soon. The Ironman 70.3, also known as a Half Ironman is half the distance of the full, which is 140.6 miles. The 70.3 refers to the length of the race.
‘A Proud father’
Posting pictures of his son at the Ironman 70.3 completion line on X, the CM of Assam wrote a heartwarming message which clearly showed how pleased he was about Nandil’s performance as well as subtly flaunting that he was studying in one of the most premier law schools in the country:
“From a proud father:
On Friday, 5th December, my son Nandil completed the Ironman 70.3 in Bahrain — a gruelling 1.9 km swim, 90 km cycle and 21.1 km run, all in one continuous push. He finished in 6 hours 48 minutes, after just 3–4 months of preparation.
He now sets his sights on a full Ironman — 3.8 km swim, 180 km cycle and 42.2 km run — which he hopes to conquer before graduating from National Law University, Bengaluru next May.
Wishing him strength, joy, and the courage to keep pushing his limits.”
He concluded the post by saying that Nandil aimed to complete the full Ironman before graduating from National Law School of India University in Bengaluru in 2026. Nandil Sarma is eldest of Himanta Biswa Sarma’s two children with Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. Having completed his education from the prestigious Doon School where he became a captain, Nandil joined India’s top law college in 2021 and will be graduating soon. He is an avid fitness and sports enthusiast.
What is the Ironman triathlon?
The Ironman Triathlon is one of the world’s most challenging endurance races, designed to push athletes to their absolute physical and mental limits. It consists of three back-to-back segments: a 3.86 km open-water swim, followed by a 180.25 km cycling course, and finally a 42.2 km full marathon run. First time participaters may choose to do the less intimidating Ironman 70.3 which is half the length of the original.
Athletes must complete all three legs within a strict time limit of 17 hours, making the event a true test of a person’s stamina and endurance. Known for its grueling nature and global prestige, the Ironman is considered the ultimate benchmark for endurance athletes, drawing thousands of competitors from around the world who train for months, sometimes even years, to earn the coveted title of “Ironman.”
