Speaking to Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast, the Metro In Dino star reflected on the struggles she faces initially. She revealed that a film offer from Karan Johar, who joked she should lose “half her weight”, as well as her mother Amrita Singh’s own health journey inspired her to change her lifestyle and keep going.
“I was huge, man. It was not healthy on any level. It was hormonally affecting me, which still happens. Every time I overeat or when I am touching that 60 kg mark, you can start seeing that I am not okay,” she said.
Sara admitted her confidence took a hit during her college years. “I wasn’t overweight; I broke the weighing scale. When you wake up weighing 85 kilos, and nothing fits, you start thinking—85 to 96, what’s the difference? That’s the worst mindset to have, and I fell into it. I’d just eat that brownie,” she recalled.
Agreeing with Allahbadia’s comment about the “fat kid” mentality never truly leaving, she added, “It doesn’t go away, ever. That fat complex is in the brain forever.”
The actor shared that even after years of maintaining her fitness, she has to remain vigilant. “My things became chunky, my face became big, that really does happen. I have to be extremely mindful of what I am eating. Staying on track is very important for me,” she said.
Sara Ali Khan’s advice on weight loss
“You definitely should keep a check on what you are eating because it affects more than just your visual appearance; it affects your hormonal balance, and that is extremely important,” she emphasised. She also pointed out that unhealthy eating habits can impact mental health as well as physical wellbeing.
In another interaction with Pinkvilla, Sara revealed that she cut out junk food, refined sugar, and processed carbs completely. Following a strict “no sugar, no milk, and no carbs” regimen, she combined this with an intense fitness routine involving cardio workouts, like cycling, running, and Pilates, as well as strength training and functional exercises. She also added yoga and dance to keep workouts fun and engaging. On some days, she trained for over an hour.
Even though PCOS makes weight loss extremely challenging, Sara’s approach proved effective. Through consistent workouts, disciplined diets, and professional guidance, she reduced her weight from 96 kg to 51 kg.
