Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, best known for helming cult classics like Gangs of Wasseypur, recently opened up about his personal struggles with mental health and the role yoga played in helping him navigate those dark periods. In a candid conversation with celebrity yoga therapist Rupal Sidhpura Faria, Kashyap revealed that consistent yoga practice became a lifeline for him during a prolonged phase of depression following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Marking a decade of practicing yoga together, the duo shared a collaborative post on Instagram where they sat down and had a heart-to-heart conversation. The post came with an emotional caption from Kashyap, which said, “Thank you for doing this! Hands down the most beautiful human being I have known! I love you!”
Speaking on the emotional and physical transformation he experienced, Kashyap said, “In many ways. The first 4–5 years of consistently doing yoga, actually if it wasn’t there… my years of depression that started from post-Covid for 2–3 years, I wouldn’t have survived.”
He went on to share how yoga helped him build a resilient inner foundation. “The internal body muscle memory was so strong that I have pushed through various diseases, mental illnesses and everything,” he said.

While discussing his initial skepticism, the filmmaker admitted that certain yoga practices had once seemed unusual. “Other than suryanamaskar and the things that I knew about yoga before we started training, most of the things that you made me do I found ridiculous. I didn’t know in yoga you do this. Like you made me buy this chair for chair yoga—I thought, what is chair yoga? You made me buy that wheel… But everything helped, and I realised my whole flexibility and everything started improving because of that,” he said.
Kashyap’s honest confessions and revelations show how important holistic wellness practices are in the entertainment industry, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic. His remarks also focus on the power of long-term discipline.
