It gets its name from Jean-Martin Charcot, Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth, the first to describe the disease in 1886. As per several reports from Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, several common symptoms include weakness and atrophy in the lower legs and feet, along with high foot arches and hammertoes. Those with this rare condition tend to have poor balance, face difficulty in running, and lose sensation in their hands and feet. Symptoms also include tremors, and loss of control over fine motor skills, and even chronic pain in advanced stages.
The neuromuscular disorder can be studied using nerve conduction studies, genetic testing, and examining the family history. In case of severe deformity, doctors opt for surgery to correct the hammertoe or high arches.
