Today, devotees across India are celebrating Krishna Janmashtami, the birth of Lord Krishna. Temples are decorated with lights and flowers, bhajans are being sung, and Krishna jhoolas are ready for devotees. At home, families are making festive sweets, snacks and getting ready for the Janmashtami fast. Though fasting is an important part of the festival for many, it can sometimes leave you feeling tired, dizzy, or dehydrated if not done right. Hence, to know what tips one should follow to fast safely, we got in touch with an expert who shared his insights on the same.
Dr. Sandeep Sonawane, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, says, “Fasting should not become a strain on your body. With some planning, you can avoid health risks like dehydration.”
Dr. Sonawane shares easy fasting tips for a safe and healthy Janmashtami:
1. Prepare in advance
What you eat before the fast matters. “Before starting the fast, have balanced meals with curd and legumes that provide slow-releasing energy,” says Dr. Sonawane. “Also add hydrating foods like watermelon and citrus fruits.” He advises against heavy fried foods that can leave you feeling sluggish.
2. Hydrate smartly
Drinking too much water at once won’t help. Instead, sip steadily before the fast begins. “Include natural electrolytes like coconut water, lemon water, or buttermilk a day or two before. This helps your body store hydration better,” he explains.
3. Choose the right fasting foods
If your fasting rules allow fruits, go for water-rich ones like papaya, muskmelon, and grapes. Dry fruits such as almonds, raisins, and dates can provide quick energy without weighing you down. “Avoid caffeine during the fast as it speeds up dehydration,” explains Dr. Sonawane.
4. Avoid oily foods while breaking the fast
When it’s time to eat, pakoras, chips, and excess potatoes might look tempting, but they can cause rapid sugar spikes followed by crashes. “Opt for lighter, balanced foods instead, so your energy levels stay stable,” he says.
5. Break your fast gently
Don’t rush into a heavy meal. “Start with a small fruit or a glass of warm milk,” suggests Dr. Sonawane. After that, you can have easy-to-digest options like sabudana khichdi, lauki curry, or soft rotis.
6. Listen to your body
If you feel dizzy, overly weak, or dehydrated, take a short break and rehydrate. “Fasting is about devotion, but your health should never be compromised,” he said.
This Janmashtami, celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna with devotion, but also with care. With the right food, hydration, and pacing, you can enjoy the festival without feeling drained or dizzy.
