The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall of all Member’s Mark Super Greens dietary supplement powder from all US stores. This comes following an investigation into illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Richmond infections linked to a single lot of moringa leaf powder supplied by an Indian vendor based in Rajasthan, named Vallon Farm Direct of Jodhpur.
FDA investigation and recall of Moringa supplement
A specific lot of the green powdered supplement was found to be the reason behind at least eleven cases across seven states. With three hospitalised, the product was found to be sold across the US at Sam’s Club stores. Cases span across Florida, Kansas, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, with illnesses reported between May and September 2025. State laboratories in Virginia and Michigan found Salmonella in leftover powders collected from patients’ homes, and the bacteria matched the outbreak strain.
The FDA found that the moringa leaf powder from a firm based in Jodhpur, explains ‘all illnesses’, included in the traceback investigation of the bacterial outbreak. They have advised consumers and retailers not to sell, eat, or serve the recalled product. Distributors have been advised not to promote the sale of the product. Additionally, Africa Imports, another wholesaler of African goods in the US, has voluntarily recalled its moringa powder product. The FDA is further working to determine the point of contamination and what additional products are impacted.

What is Salmonella infection?
A Salmonella infection is a bacterial infection that affects the intestinal tract. Usually caused by consuming contaminated food or water, it is the most common gut-affecting bacterium. According to the FDA warning, symptoms of a Salmonella infection are visible within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. The Mayo Clinic reported that it may also lead to infections like typhoid fever, faecal infections, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, chills, loss of appetite, and blood in the stool in severe cases.
“Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections,” noted the US FDA.
What is moringa powder used for?
Moringa powder is derived from dried leaves of the Moringa oleifera tree or the ‘miracle tree’. With a high nutrient profile, the powder is a common dietary supplement and a natural remedy, especially in India. With high levels of Vitamin A, C, and E, it is also loaded with minerals like potassium, iron, and other antioxidants. Given its composition, it is often consumed by those looking for an organic and non-medical way of regulating blood sugar, improving heart health, enhancing digestion, and improving bone, skin, and overall health.
How dry powder causes infection
The Salmonella bacteria are known to thrive in low-moisture foods, as per a 2013 study ‘Mechanisms of survival, responses, and sources of Salmonella in low-moisture environments.’ It also hints at the heat-resistant properties of the microorganism, which proves to be risky if consumed uncooked.
