The Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in Maharashtra continues to escalate, with two more fatalities reported on Friday, ToI reported. This brings the total death toll to four, while the Pune-Pimpri Chinchwad cluster has grown by 10 new cases overnight, reaching 140 infections in just three weeks.
Among the latest victims, a 60-year-old Pune resident battling a rare neurological condition and a 36-year-old taxi driver from Pimpri Chinchwad succumbed to the illness, the report further said. Meanwhile, Telangana has reported its first GBS case in the season, involving a 25-year-old woman from Siddipet district. She was admitted to KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad in critical condition and has been placed on ventilator support, officials in Hyderabad confirmed to the news outlet.
In Assam, a 17-year-old girl reportedly became the first suspected GBS fatality of the season in the state. She was admitted to Pratiksha Hospital in critical condition about ten days ago and succumbed on Friday night, PTI reported. A paediatrician from the hospital, speaking anonymously, confirmed the diagnosis but stated there was no official confirmation from either the hospital or state health authorities.
GBS is a rare neurological disorder that leads to sudden numbness, muscle weakness, and, in severe cases, paralysis. Symptoms include limb weakness and loose motions. While the condition is treatable, severe cases can be fatal.
