Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in Sydney following a injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Iyer reportedly suffered internal bleeding from a rib cage injury sustained during the third match against Australia.

In statement, the BCCI said, “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.”

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” it added.

Shreyas got injured during 3rd ODI

India played its third ODI against Australia in Sydney on Saturday during which, vice-captain Iyer took a fantastic diving catch, as he ran from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey on a Harshit Rana’s delivery.

However, as he dived, he landed awkwardly on his elbows and ribs, on his left side. Though he caught the ball, but the dive left him in extreme pain. He was seen clutching his ribs as he was taken back to the pavillion by the medical staff.

The scans later revealed there was internal bleeding from damage to the rib cage, after which he has been admitted to the ICU of a Sydney hospital.

During the series, Shreyas scored 72 runs in two games, including a valiant 77-ball 61 in the second Adelaide ODI, during which he made a century stand with Rohit Sharma.

India vs Australia series

India lost the 3-match ODI series against Australia with a 2-1 performance. In the third match, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made light work of Australia’s modest total, cruising home with 11.3 overs to spare and nine wickets intact.

Rohit was at his imperious best, smashing his 33rd ODI century, while Kohli wrapped things up with an unbeaten 74, climbing to second on the all-time ODI run-scorers list, just behind the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

Australia were bowled out for 236, with Matt Renshaw top-scoring with 56 and Mitchell Marsh contributing 41, while the rest of the batting lineup struggled. The hosts had looked set to approach 300, but a late collapse before the 40th over allowed India to claw back into the contest. All Indian bowlers picked up wickets, but Harshit Rana stood out with a four-wicket haul, boosting his confidence. India now hold a narrow advantage as they head into the second innings.
