In the wake of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg’s tragic death, Assam Police‘s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has conducted raids at three places, including one linked to the organiser, in Guwahati to investigate the singer’s drowning accident, reports NDTV.
According to the report, a search was conducted at the house of Northeast India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, who is also the Assamese singer’s manager, and that of his sound recordist. Earlier, the Government of Assam had banned Mahanta from organising any events in the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured that all angles related to Garg’s death will be probed and the case would be handed over to the CBI in case SIT’s investigation is not satisfactory.
Assam CM assures of thorough investigation
“Have faith in the SIT. They will probe all the possibilities that led to the death. If the SIT fails, we will hand over the case to the CBI,” the Chief Minister was quoted by NDTV.
“Your objective is clear. We will find out the details of how the incident took place. A section of people around Zubeen Garg have tried to use him for their gains. I had observed this for a long time and told this to Zubeen as well. The event that Mahanta organised… I never encouraged it. We will not fund them anymore and have banned them,” he added.
The 10-member SIT team
A 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, has been formed to investigate Zubeen Garg’s death. The team includes senior officers from the CID and various districts, tasked with ensuring a time-bound and transparent investigation. All members will remain on the case until the probe is complete.
The singer drowned in Singapore on September 19, a day before his performance at the Northeast India Festival. The singer was accorded state funeral as thousands of his fans gathered to pay their last respects.
