Assamese singer Zubeen Garg breathed his last in Singapore after drowning in Singapore. As his mortal remains arrive at the Guwahati Airport today, officials from both countries have launched a probe into the matter. Several FIRs have been registered against Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organiser of the North East India Festival, where Garg was set to perform. His manager, Siddharth Sharma, has also been booked.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared that the Assam Police was urged to transfer the case to the CID. Reporting that the post-mortem had been completed, the CM had earlier revealed that the 52-year-old singer took off his life jacket before taking the fatal plunge. Denying the scuba diving reasons from the initial reports, his wife, Garima Saikia, revealed that Garg had suffered seizures in the past, which might have caused such an accident..
How did the ‘Ya Ali’ singer pass away?
While the details of the post-mortem have not been made public, it has been confirmed that he was accompanied by several of his team members on the yacht. Among his companions on the scuba-diving trip, Abhimanyu Talukdar was named as the Singapore resident who booked the yacht. Apart from Zubeen Garg and Talukdar, there were four members from the singer’s team and two crew members. Shortly after diving, Garg was “found floating” in the sea as the crew tried to retrieve him. They performed CPR at the port before Garg was rushed to the Singapore General Hospital. Upon arrival, he was kept in the ICU for two hours and then declared dead.
As his mortal remains made a touchdown in his hometown, several state officials, his wife, and thousands of fans made their way to the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Shouting ‘Jai Zubeen da’, the fans greeted the convoy with flowers and garlands to pay respect to the fallen legend. Wailing, “Why Zubeen da, why did you have to leave us so soon?”, they were seen holding cut-outs of the singer and the traditional Assamese ‘gamosa’ with the words ‘Z G (Zubeen Garg) Forever’ woven in it.
