War 2 Box Office Collection: Not every sequel is a winner in the cinematic universe. Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2, the latest in Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) Spy Universe, hit the screens with a lot of hype, with a star-studded cast and action packed sequences. Despite the initial buzz, the film couldn’t sustain the momentum at the box office. But thanks to a big jump in collections, it has now crossed the worldwide collections of Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger.
Strong Weekend Boost for War 2
Despite getting mixed reviews, War 2 saw a big turnaround over the Independence Day weekend. The film saw a 55% jump in collections on its second Saturday, earning ₹6.25 crore net, up from ₹4 crore on Friday.
As of now, War 2 has earned ₹214.50 crore net (₹256 crore gross) in India. Overseas, it has collected under $9 million (around ₹74 crore), taking its total worldwide gross to around ₹330 crore. According to early estimates by Sacnilk, on its 11th day, the film earned ₹4.71 crore at the domestic box office.
How War 2 Beat Ek Tha Tiger
The sixth film in the YRF Spy Universe had a shaky start, with a 70% drop in collections on the second day and everyone was worried that it might be the first in the franchise to not break even. While those concerns still remain, the film has now crossed the global collections of Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif’s Ek Tha Tiger, which collected ₹321 crore.
This milestone means War 2 is no longer the lowest earner in the Spy Universe. But when it comes to footfalls, it still lags behind other films, including Tiger 3. Currently, Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan is the top earner in the YRF Spy Universe with a worldwide gross of ₹1,050 crore.
Big Names, Bigger Expectations
Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 has Hrithik Roshan back as RAW agent Kabir Dhaliwal and Jr NTR making his Bollywood debut as the villain. The film also stars Kiara Advani, Ashutosh Rana, Anil Kapoor and Varun Badola.
Despite the big budget—₹300-400 crore—and the hype, the film got mixed to negative reviews. Critics praised the performances and action but the screenplay and visual effects were the weak links.
