Veteran actor Manoj Kumar has died at the age of 87. He breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. Reacting on the legendary actor’s passing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X and said that he was deeply saddened. He called Kumar an “icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films.” The PM further added, “Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
Manoj Kumar’s death was caused by cardiogenic shock after a heart attack. He had also been suffering from liver disease for several months, which worsened his health. He was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, and had been receiving treatment since then.
Born as Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Kumar’s rise from a young actor to a beloved film star has been phenomenal. Though his career started in the late 1950s, he went on to become one of Bollywood’s biggest stars in the 1960s and 1970s.
Manoj Kumar got famous for playing patriotic characters in films like Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Shaheed, which earned him the title “Bharat Kumar.” Kumar not only acted in but also directed and produced many successful films that struck a deep chord with Indian audiences, often focusing on themes of nationalism and pride.
One of his most significant achievements was his directorial debut Upkar (1967), which was a huge hit and won him the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film.
