Despite a slow start, Paresh Rawal‘s The Taj Story has managed to sustain its box office earnings as the film nears Rs 20 cr mark. The film has had its own share of controversies with its premise ruffling many a feather. While the authenticity of its storyline couldn’t be established in court, the film was allowed to release with disclaimers.

What the film is about

For the uninitiated the movie challenges the history of Taj Mahal and claims it was once a Shiva temple. This is the reason the Tushar Amrish Goel-directorial also attracted a PIL. The film has been successful in drawing audience to the theatres with its steady collection, even if the momentum has slowed down a bit.

The Taj Story’s Box Office performance so far

According to trade website Sacnilk, the film has collected approx. Rs 17 crore, and is aiming for Rs 20 crore next. The film opened to a lukewarm response, collecting Rs 1 crore on its first day. The biggest jump came on its first weekend as the movie added Rs 3.75 crore, taking its total to almost Rs 5 crore. The earnings remained encouraging over the next few days with the film earning 1-1.5 cr on an average. At the end of Week 1, the figure of 11 crore looked promising.

The earnings saw another jump on the second weekend with the combined total of Saturday and Sunday reaching Rs 4 crore. So far, the second week is slow but steady and it is expected that the film will pick pace again on its third weekend.

Looking at the Day 13 occupancy rate, the film is receiving maximum footfalls from Chennai (29%), followed by Mumbai (9.75%) and Ahmedabad (9.75%).

Paresh Rawal’s 5th biggest hit

When it comes to the most successful films of Paresh Rawal, The Taj Story will be placed on the fifth spot with its current collections. Adding 10 cr more will make the film the actor’s fourth biggest hit, surpassing Raja Natwarlal which collected 26.63 crore at the box office. The highest grosser of Paresh Rawal with Rs 81.47 cr collections, remains Oh My God, his another courtroom drama. Phir Hera Pheri that collected Rs 40.82 crore is the second highest grosser of Rawal. Bhagam Bhag with similar collections of Rs 40.25 crore is placed at third spot among Paresh Rawal biggest hits.

The Taj Story, also stars Zakir Hussain, and Amruta Khanvilkar in key roles.
