After successfully ruling Indian television for years, it’s time for some bad news for Kapil Sharma’s comedy show. Kapil Sharma made a high-profile leap from television to Netflix in 2024 with The Great Indian Kapil Show. However, recent viewership data suggests that there is a dip in the show’s momentum even though Kapil continues to invite interesting guests on his show.

Kapil Sharma’s show loses viewership

Currently in its third season, The Great Indian Kapil Show has aired five episodes till now. The season premiere got a lot of attention and viewership as the debut episode featuring Salman Khan. That episode recorded 1.6 million views and 1.9 million hours watched, according to Netflix’s reports, which divide total viewing hours by episode duration to estimate view count.

The second episode featured the ensemble cast of Metro… In Dino. Though Netflix announced a total of 2 million views across the first two episodes over two weeks, it did not break down numbers for the second episode individually, which could mean that this is where things started to go wrong.

In week three, the guest line-up included Indian cricket stars Gautam Gambhir, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Rishabh Pant. Despite the popular names, the overall engagement declined. Netflix reported 1.2 million views for all three episodes combined at that point, marking a clear drop in viewership.

The fourth and fifth episodes have now completely dropped out from the Global Top 10 Non-English TV shows chart on Netflix. For perspective, the lowest-ranked title on that chart recently logged 1.4 million views over two weeks, which seems to be higher than Kapil Sharma’s recent episodes.

However, even as the show hits record lows, this is not the first time for Kapil Sharma. The show’s previous seasons saw a similar trend. Season 2 initially opened to strong viewership, but ratings began to drop after the fourth episode, which featured Kareena Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor. Despite garnering 4.2 million viewing hours, that episode marked a dip to just 900,000 total views across the first four episodes by the fourth week.

Season 1 also followed a similar pattern of low viewership. The episode featuring Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal brought the numbers to just 1.2 million cumulative views across four episodes, with total watch time sitting at 3.9 million hours.

Kapil Sharma shows no signs of slowing down

Even though the views might be low, Kapil Sharma’s show remains among Netflix India’s most viewed and discussed content. In the upcoming episode, we will see appearances by popular content creators Raj Shamani, Saurabh Dwivedi, Kamiya Jani, and Samdish Bhatia.
