Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss 19 that premiered on August 24 and currently airing on Colors TV and Jio Hotstar, has landed in legal trouble over unauthorised use of two Bollywood songs, according to a Mid Day report.
PPL India (Phonographic Performance Limited India) has issued a legal notice to the makers of the reality show and demanded Rs 2 crore from them over not giving due credit for the songs Chikni Chameli (Agneepath) and Dhat Teri Ki (Gori Tere Pyaar Mein) in episode 11 that streamed on September 11.
The makers of the show Endemon Shine India has been accused by PPL India to use the sound recordings of the said songs without getting the mandatory public performance license, according to the report.
Who was named in the notice
The notice dated September 19, was served by advocate Hiten Ajay Wasan. It names the production house’s directors Thomas Gousset, Nicolas Chazarain, and Deepak Dhar, according to the Mid Day report.
“Both songs are licensed to Sony Music Entertainment India, one of the 450-plus music labels whose public performance rights are exclusively administered by PPL. PPL argues that because Endemol Shine India did not obtain a licence under Section 30 of the Copyright Act 1957, the use amounts to a ‘wilful infringement’,” a source from the legal team told the tabloid.
PPL India apart from demanding damages worth Rs 2 crore and requisite license fees, has also issued a cease-and-desist notice from using its sound recordings without authorisation.
