The ongoing controversy surrounding Deepika Padukone’s exit from director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film Spirit continues to stir discussions in Bollywood. While speculation around her departure remains rife, industry veterans Kajol and Ajay Devgn have weighed in, supporting more balanced working conditions for actors—particularly working mothers.
What did Kajol and Ajay Devgn say?
At the trailer launch event of their film Maa, Kajol addressed the issue indirectly but firmly: “I love the fact if you can work less.” Supporting her, Ajay Devgn said, “Most honest filmmakers will not have a problem with this.” He emphasised that many in the industry are already adapting to shorter working hours, especially understanding the needs of parents.
He added, “Even apart from being a mother and working for eight hours, most of the industry does understand all this. It’s really about mutual respect and flexibility.”
Sandeep Reddy Vanga-Deepika Padukone controversy
The row escalated after Sandeep Reddy Vanga posted a cryptic but scathing message on X (formerly Twitter), indirectly targeting Deepika Padukone. While he didn’t name her, the Animal director accused the actress of violating an “unsaid NDA” and playing “dirty PR games.”
“When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA between us… You’ve ‘DISCLOSED’ the person that you are… Is this what your feminism stands for?” Vanga wrote.
His reaction came after reports suggested Deepika had shared details about the film and criticised certain elements, possibly prompting her withdrawal.
Why Deepika Reportedly walked out?
Several reasons have been reported for Deepika Padukone’s decision to step away from Spirit:
- Work-Life Balance: Deepika recently embraced motherhood with the birth of her daughter, Dua. She reportedly insisted on 8-hour shifts, allowing only about 6 hours for filming.
- Compensation and Rights: She allegedly demanded RS 20 crore and a share in the film’s profits.
- Creative Concerns: Reports claim she was uncomfortable with the number of bold scenes in the script.
Deepika’s take on work-life balance
Deepika has spoken before about prioritizing mental health and balance. “I realised the importance of finding a work-life balance. I don’t intend to burn out. I’m not going anywhere,” she once said in an interview. She also criticised the perception that needing personal time is unprofessional.
