Aamir Khan, often hailed as Bollywood’s perfectionist, recently opened up about one of the darkest chapters of his life — his painful separation from his first wife, Reena Dutta. While their love story began like a movie scene — neighbours exchanging glances through windows — it ultimately took a tragic emotional toll on the actor, reported The Indian Express.
Aamir and Reena’s romance blossomed long before his Bollywood debut. Desperate to win her heart, Aamir even wrote a love letter in his own blood. Though that dramatic gesture failed to impress Reena, love eventually prevailed and the two got married secretly. Reena later made a brief appearance in Aamir’s debut film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. The couple had two children — Junaid and Ira Khan.
However, the fairy tale ended in 2002, shortly after their first big production Lagaan became a blockbuster. While the couple presented a composed front to the public, Aamir recently revealed how deeply the divorce affected him. In a candid promo shared by The Lallantop, he confessed, “When Reena and I separated, that evening I finished an entire bottle of alcohol. For the next 1.5 years, I drank every day. I never slept. I would lose consciousness due to drinking. I was trying to kill myself.”
He added that during this low point, he withdrew from the film industry entirely. “I was not even working then. Neither did I care to meet anybody. The same year Lagaan released and a newspaper article called me ‘Man of the Year’. I found it very ironic,” he recalled, his voice breaking as he sang a line from Gaman’s melancholic song “Aapki Yaad Aati Rahi Raat Bhar.”
Despite the emotional upheaval, Aamir has always spoken respectfully about Reena. On Koffee with Karan, he once said, “Reena and I were married for 16 long years. When we split up, it was traumatic… But we did not lose love or respect for each other.”
Following his divorce from Reena, Aamir married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005 and had a son, Azad. That marriage also ended in 2021, after 16 years. He is currently reported to be dating Gauri Spratt, a longtime friend. Despite the past, Aamir maintains strong relationships with both ex-wives and continues to co-parent his children.
Aamir’s emotional revelations offer a rare glimpse into the personal battles behind his professional success — a story of love, loss, and survival.
