Shakira, the Colombian singer and songwriter, has moved on from her breakup with footballer Gerard Piqué, but the anguish she experienced during the process is still fresh in her mind. In a recent interview, the singer revealed that the breakup caused significant emotional turmoil, greatly impacting her.

Now on a healing journey, Shakira opened up about her personal life in an interview with Rolling Stone, two years after the highly publicized separation.

Speaking about the split, which she described as the saddest period of her life, the Grammy-winning performer said, “The suffering I felt was probably the greatest I had ever experienced in my entire life, and it kept me from functioning at times.”

Shakira described the feeling as if someone had stabbed a hole in her chest, which was so powerful that it felt nearly physical. She said it was as if she had a visible hole in her chest that people could see through.

Earlier, Shakira addressed her personal turmoil through her music and in an interview with People en Español in 2023, revealing that Gerard had “betrayed” her while her father was in the ICU recovering from a tragic fall. Gerard allegedly cheated on Shakira with Clara Chia Marti, his current girlfriend.

Shakira’s 2023 breakup anthem, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” expresses her grief through song. Reflecting on her journey, she now sees it as a “journey back to myself,” finding her way through her music. She added that she is in a place where the worst has happened, and the experience has awakened a new sense of autonomy and independence in her.

About the split

Shakira and Gerard first met in 2010 and remained together for over a decade without getting married. They share two sons, nine-year-old Milan and seven-year-old Sasha. In June 2022, Shakira and Gerard announced their separation through a joint statement, expressing regret and requesting privacy for the sake of their children, whom they prioritize above all else.

Recently, Gerard made his relationship with Clara Chia Marti public on Instagram. Reports suggest they began dating while he was still in a relationship with Shakira.
