Ayushmann Khuranna starrer ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ turned out to be a surprise package as it generated better box office collections during its second weekend compared to the first though four films released last week – Badmashiyaan, Dirty Politics, Coffee Bloom and Hey Bro. However, none of them could make a mark.
But While the film collected Rs 6.12 crore in the first weekend, during the second weekend it made Rs 6.72 crore, taking the grand total to Rs 17.36 crore which includes the collection of the week days. The ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ box office collections now stand at Rs 20.57 crore.
Ayushmann Khuranna-Bhumi Pednekar starrer has become the 6th biggest movie of the year behind, Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’ (Rs 95.56 crore), Varun Dhawan’s ‘Badlapur’ (Rs 50 crore), Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Roy’ (Rs 44.52 crore), Arjun Kapoor’s ‘Tevar’ (Rs 39.26 crore) and Amitabh Bachchan’s Shamitabh (Rs 22.46 crore)
According to Gautam Dutta, CEO, PVR Cinema, “Dum Laga Ke Haisha has been the film of the week, proving yet again that content is king. The
word of mouth has worked in favour of the film and it has collected more in its second weekend. The weekend occupancy was a healthy 40 per cent.”
Apparently, in Eros Cinema, the single screen theatre, that is running only one night show of the film, the response hasn’t been as good. Muralidharan, manager, Eros Cinema said, “We started screening the movie from the second week onwards. The occupancy has been close to 25 per cent.”

However, he justifies by saying that it could also be because the theatre has a seating capacity of 1000. The same, however, cannot be said for the recent releases. Talking about Badmashiyaan, trade analyst Vinod Mirani says that it is a film sans face value and amateur script and handling. “With the exam season, it adds to the year’s disaster list. The film had one of the poorest opening day with collections ranging around `10 lakh; and thereafter, any improvement was irrelevant. It managed to collect just about Rs 50 lakh in its first weekend,” he remarked.
Another release, Coffee Bloom has got a better response, owing to the good reviews, according to Dutta. But the other releases, namely Dirty Politics and Hey Bro fell flat at the boxoffice. “In terms of occupancy, the films stand at 15 per cent and 12 per cent respectively,” says Dutta.
According to Mirani, Dirty Politics has put together Rs 4.2 crore for the opening weekend. “However, Hey Bro, a misadventure by choreographer Ganesh Acharya, has backfired. The film will prove to be a total loss of investments plus expenses incurred on releasing it. It has barely managed to cross the Rs 50 lakh mark in its opening weekend,” he said.
